Do you need gutter guards?

Guards pay off when trees hang over or near the roof. Maples drop helicopters every spring and leaves every fall, and oaks and pines add more. If your gutters pour over the front edge in the first heavy rain of October, that's usually why.

They also make sense on a two-story house, where cleaning means an extension ladder and someone holding the bottom of it.

On an open lot with no trees near the roofline, guards are usually a waste of money. Without trees, gutters mostly catch roof grit, and rain flushes that out on its own. And no guard is maintenance-free, regardless of what the ads say.

Not sure which side of that line your house is on? We'll come look.

RainDrop or Rhino: the two guards we install

They're built differently, so they're good at different things. Neither is a foam or brush insert. This Old House puts foam at 2 to 4 years of life and brush at 5 to 7, against 10 to 20 for micro-mesh.

RainDrop is the one we install most. It's black, so from the street it looks like a shadow along the roofline. It fits both 5-inch and 6-inch gutters. Home Source Roofing is on RainDrop's list of registered installers, and you can check that on RainDrop's own warranty page.

Rhino Guard is the newer addition. Micro-mesh is the better choice under pines, where needles would otherwise work their way between the bars of a grid.

The trees decide which one goes on your house. We look at what's growing over the roof, how steep the roof is and what shape the gutters are in before we recommend either. Our rule is simple: if pines drop needles on your roof, Rhino Guard. Anything else gets RainDrop.

What fall and winter here do to gutters

Hagerstown averages about 43.5 inches of rain and snow a year, based on NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals. October still brings around 4 inches of it, right as the leaves come down. A gutter packed with wet leaves in October is a gutter that overflows by November.

Then it freezes. January nights here average 23°F and afternoons about 40°F, so snow melts on the roof by day and refreezes at night.

No gutter guard stops ice dams. Those start higher up: warm air from the attic melts snow on the roof, and the water refreezes at the cold edge. The fix is attic ventilation, and we put ice and water shield, a waterproof layer, along the eaves of every roof we install.

RainDrop's black surface soaks up winter sun and helps clear snow. RainDrop itself says shady north-facing runs may still need heat cable.

How we install gutter guards

1

Check the gutters first.

Guards on gutters that sag, leak at the seams or are too small for the roof are money spent twice. If the gutters are near the end, we'll show you what gutter replacement involves and do both in one trip.

2

Clean them out.

We clean out the gutters and flush the downspouts first. That's part of the job, not an add-on.

3

Fasten at the front lip.

RainDrop's installation guidance is to attach the guard to the gutter's front lip and never nail the back flange down into the roof. Nails through shingles are where leaks start, so this is the step a roofer pays attention to.

4

Check the downspouts.

Every downspout gets run with water before we leave, so you know it drains.

5

Register the warranty.

We register your RainDrop warranty for you, inside RainDrop's 30-day window.

On an average house, the install takes half a day to a full day.

What gutter guards cost here

On an average home, $1,800 to $4,000. Four things set where you land:

  • Total footage. Guards run the full length of the gutters. Bump-outs, porch roofs and extra corners add feet fast, so a small house can carry more gutter than you'd guess.
  • Which guard. RainDrop runs about $4 a foot more than Rhino Guard.
  • Height. Second- and third-story runs take more time and more ladder work.
  • The gutters underneath. Guards only go on gutters worth protecting. If yours need work first, that's a separate line on the estimate.

For comparison, This Old House surveyed 1,000 guard owners in 2025 and found professional installation averaging about $16 per foot nationally, or $3,000 to $6,000 for 200 feet of gutter.

Financing is available with terms up to 144 months, subject to credit approval.

What maintenance is left

Less, but not none. In that same This Old House survey, 44% of owners said they never clean their gutters after installing guards, and 38% clean them once a year.

Plan on a look every spring and fall. With Rhino, that may mean rinsing the mesh with a hose, and with either guard, checking that each downspout runs clear in a hard rain. Still easier than two ladder trips a year.

Gutter guard FAQs

What do roofers say about gutter guards?

Ours is simple: they're worth it under trees and a waste of money on an open lot. They cut cleaning way down but don't end it. And they should never be fastened through your shingles. Ask anyone quoting guards how they attach them before you sign.

Will gutter guards void my roof warranty?

Not when they're installed right. RainDrop's own instructions say to fasten the guard to the gutter's front lip and never nail through the roof. A nail through the shingles is the problem, not the guard. Rhino Guard goes on the same way, with nothing fastened through the shingles.

Which gutter guard is best for pine needles?

Micro-mesh, which is why we carry Rhino Guard. Its stainless mesh stops needles that can slip between the bars of a grid guard. Under maples and oaks, RainDrop's sloped grid sheds leaves well and lets roof grit wash through instead of building up on top.

Can you put gutter guards on my existing gutters?

Usually, if the gutters are sound. We check that they're pitched toward the downspouts, hanging tight to the house and big enough for the roof. If they fail any of those checks, a guard won't fix the problem. The gutters come first.

Can I install gutter guards myself?

On a one-story house with a short run, yes. Box-store screens cost about $6 to $8 a foot to do yourself, according to This Old House. On a two-story house, or if you want a registered manufacturer warranty, it's a job for an installer with the right ladders.

On February 7, 2026, a severe windstorm pulled several shingles off my roof. When I went out the next day to collect some of the fallen pieces, I was surprised to see how deteriorated they were—what looked fine from the ground was actually in pretty bad shape up close. A trusted friend recommended Home Source Roofing out of Williamsport, Maryland, and I’m glad they did. Michele from Home Source came out on February 11 to assess the damage using both a drone and a ground inspection. She recommended immediate tarping due to incoming rain, and it was completed the very next day—just in time, because we had several days of heavy rain right after. I also had Home Source look at a gutter and downspout issue that was contributing to shingle problems. They recommended a solution, and I chose to have that work done in addition to the roof replacement. Shortly after, I received a very reasonable quote with two package options using GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Hunter Green. I chose the Gold package, which offered additional protection with upgraded underlayment and enhanced vent covers. Both options featured 50-year shingles, which gave me great peace of mind. On March 18, the crew arrived right on time and got straight to work. The entire process was incredibly organized and efficient. They started by laying protective tarps over my porches and yard, then moved seamlessly through removing the old shingles, making necessary repairs, and installing the new roof. The onsite lead, Christian, kept everything running smoothly and maintained great communication throughout the project. The owner, Brian, also personally stopped by on the day of installation to ensure everything was proceeding as planned, which I really appreciated. In addition, Rene from Home Source stopped by to review and coordinate the upcoming gutter and downspout work, working directly with Superior Seamless Gutters LLC to ensure everything was aligned. At one point during the tear-off, my porch was completely covered in old shingles—it looked a little wild—but by the time they finished, everything was spotless. You would never know they had been there. I’ve included before-and-after photos to show the condition of the old shingles and the quality of the finished roof. Overall, this was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The professionalism, responsiveness, attention to detail, and cleanup exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend Home Source Roofing to anyone in need of roofing services!
