Downtown and up the hill from the river are the homes the B&O built a town around, starting in the 1880s, when the yard here was one of the biggest on the railroad. Two or three layers of shingles stacked on top of each other. Code generally allows no more than two, and every extra layer hides the decking underneath.
Board sheathing instead of plywood, sometimes with gaps a modern shingle shouldn't be nailed over.
Chimneys and porch roofs where the flashing has been patched with tar more than once.
